Local: Prison Break in Aba – One dead, others critically wounded with a spray of gunshot from arm guards while trying to escape from the prison

reliably gathered that some good number of inmates on Saturday afternoon tried
breaking away from the prisons, but met strong resistance from some prisons arm
guards who thwarted their moves resulting to one inmate death and many others
injured.
A source, who
was in the Aba prison area when the inmates were attempting to escape, said,
"It was Saturday afternoon. We began to hear gunfire and chaos coming out
of prison.
He said “I
actually went to Aba Central Police Station which shares a fence with the
prison to give something to someone when I saw two injured prison arm guards
who were brought there to be treated.
Later, I saw
several police officers going in an odd manner to the prison. When I got
closer, people who had shops nearer to that location were all in fear. There
were so many bullets. I was there when I saw a prison vehicle driving away some
of the prisoners who were moaning in agony, presumably some who were wounded.
Further
reports by Smart Updates confirmed that four of the inmates who attempted to
run free were critically wounded when they were sprayed with gunshots.
A source,
however, told our reporter that one of the severely injured inmates died
yesterday from the bullet wounds he sustained while trying to escape from the
prison.
The Public
Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correction Service, Abia Command, Deputy
Superintendent of Prisons (DSP) Kalu Ikpe, told reporter that they are currently
carrying out preliminary investigation into the matter.
