Premier League football matches to return on 17th June

According to a report, the Premier League is set to return to Arsenal on Wednesday 17 June, with Aston Villa hosting Sheffield United and Manchester City at home.

Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, the 2019/2020 campaign was sharply halted back in March, while 'Project Restart' has been ramped up in recent days with clubs approving a return to full contact training on Wednesday.

Throughout the crisis, the sides of the Premier League have been in dialog and, at their most recent meeting on Thursday, a consensus appears to have been reached on the exact return date of English top flight football.

The action, as reported by the Telegraph, will resume on 17 June with the headline act City vs Arsenal.

Villa will also take on Chris Wilder 's side in a game that could have major implications at the bottom of the table.

The season should then be completed one week later with the FA Cup final scheduled to take place by 1 August. These dates are in line with plans by UEFA to sewn up the Champions League by the beginning of September.

The clubs also discussed the contentious issue of where the games will be held and as well as agreeing a resumption date.

Previously concerns have been raised about the possibility of fans congregating outside empty stadiums – breaking the social distance protocol in the process. The Mayor of Liverpool was controversial when he suggested that Reds supporters would be likely to do so if Jurgen Klopp 's side secured the club's maiden Premier League title.

Despite these concerns, the police are happy to play the vast majority of matches in their original venues with only 'high profile' games being considered for neutral venues. The Bundesliga – which returned earlier this month – did not experience such issues with fans respecting social distance regulations and staying away from stadiums.
