NEWS UPDATE Nigeria's HURIWA gives reasons why Ibrahim Magu has to resign - EFCC

Nigeria's Human Rights Writers Association, HURIWA, has called for the resignation of Ibrahim Magu, acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, as head of the anti-graft commission.

HURIWA explained that Magu's immediate resignation would rescue EFCC's image and reputation from further harm.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko and National Media Director, Zainab Yusuf, the prominent rights group has made the call. HURIWA warned Magu 's return to the EFCC would make the fight against corruption a mockery of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Also HURIWA called for a probe on forfeited assets while Magu was still in office. The statement reads: "HURIWA is calling on the suspended EFCC Acting Chairman; Ibrahim Magu to resign so as not to destroy what remains of the anti-graft agency's reputation and the urgent need to expand the scope of investigation on all asset forfeiture cases including Chief Emmanuel Nwude's grave claim.

Under Ibrahim Magu, the EFCC allegedly cornered his assets that were not part of the originally listed assets to be forfeited in the Lagos High Court judgment when he was convicted of fraud for advance fees including houses of his original family that had been built long before he had any legal issues."

The rights group also called on Buhari to ensure the country's key anti-corruption institutions are independent.

Following an accusation by the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF and Justice Minister Abubakar Malami, Magu was suspended by an enquiry panel headed by Justice Ayo Salami.

Among other allegations he has been accused of corruption, insubordination, mismanagement of recovered loots.
