On Thursday, the Nigerian government said it was considering asking students to sit for the GCE General Certificate Examination if it failed to meet with the West African Examination Council, the timetable of WAEC for the 2020 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination.

This was revealed by the State Minister for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, during the Presidential Task Force's bi-weekly press briefing on COVID-19.

According to this can be an alternative as for no reason the WASSCE can be rescheduled.

The minister further revealed that negotiations were already under way to move local language topics such as Ibo, Yoruba and Hausa as offered in Nigeria, behind their usual spots as first written topics.

"This would allow all participating countries the necessary time to write the general topics at the same time, if Nigeria could meet the WAEC timetable," according to the minister.

"Nigeria is not moving away, the option would have been to go to November to take the external GCE examinations. Nigeria is carefully studying that we could go to that if everything fails in the event.

"There is a checklist of the requirements to be set in the guideline and we've given a cut-off date so that we can know who needs help," he said.

He said many Nigerian states have complained about their inability to meet the date and that's why the federal government asked WAEC to give some time to meet the country and schools.

The minister said the government will work out a 'domestication module' after we've done general (subjects), which will take "our peculiar topics behind."

"This will buy us the time we all need to be on par with the rest of West Africa and at the same time operate because the unanimity with which WAEC has always worked is still very important for us."
