New Year Eve: Trump heads to Washington for New Year, bails on planned party unexpectedly

According to an updated daily programme published by the White House, the U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania unexpectedly changed their schedule to spend New Year’s Eve in Washington, bailing on a planned party in Florida. The two were to leave Florida on Thursday morning.

Trump will, therefore, not be present at the New Year’s party at his Mar-a-Lago club resort, which guests had bought tickets to, U.S. media reported.

An explanation for the early departure was not provided by the White House. Trump has declined to accept his Democratic opponent's electoral win, Joe Biden, and his party has filed scores of lawsuits seeking to reverse the election outcome, but all of which have been dismissed.

Both eyes are now on Jan. 6, as Congress is expected to certify the results sent by the states to the Electoral College, the next move on Biden's path to being sworn in at the Capitol Building in Washington on Jan. 20 as the 46th president.
