Politics: Step down from your office as Gov – APC informs Obaseki

The president of the All Progressive Congress of the State Caretaker, APC, Edo State, Col David Imuse Rtd. Gov. Godwin Obaseki has called for his immediate resignation from office over security problems in the state. 

Col Imuse alleged in a statement that Obaseki had run out of ideas about how the state should be governed. 

According to him the appeal has become relevant because the governor has failed to secure the lives of the Edo people, he has shown blatant disregard for the rule of law, and his personal interests are in conflict with his official interests. 

'He has failed to uphold his oath of office to protect the lives and properties of Edo people, his penchant for disobeying court orders and his decision to plunge Edo state into further indebtedness as the reasons for his call with his latest covert borrowing of N25 billion from the capital market'

‘No one is safe in Edo. The state is under siege. We have a governor who has lost focus. Fear and insecurity have become the order of the day, yet the Governor takes N700 million monthly as security vote. And so far he has not been able to deploy this huge amount to mobilise the security agencies in the state to fight criminality”.

On the recent ruling by Benin high court, Col Imuse noted that the governor does not have an iota of respect for the judicial and legislative arms of government or the rule of law but regularly runs to the courts on the most frivolous of excuses.

‘Because Edo state is designed to be governed by relevant laws”, Col Imuse said, “Edo APC is ready to take the bull by the horns, as it can no longer condone a governor who has no regard for the rule of law”.

The chairman of the Edo APC, who also blamed Governor Obaseki for making Edo the country's third most indebted state, wondered why he would clandestinely borrow N25 billion from the capital market without informing the citizens of Edo. 

This loan is unfair to Edo citizens and Governor Obaseki must return it immediately or cancel it outright because it is to be repaid by Edo taxpayers and to make matters worse, Afrinvest is the stockbroker for the facility, his own business. Not only is this action by the governor unconstitutional, there is a conflict of interests, he said.
