Technology: No 5G technology in Nigeria yet, FG insists

On Monday, the Federal Government confirmed that no telecommunications provider has been given a license to implement 5G technologies in Nigeria.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, said earlier in April that 5 G technologies has not yet been implemented in Nigeria. But the FG, through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), again claimed in a statement on Monday that it had only authorised a new technology test but still had to sanction its launch.

“The NCC back in November 2019 approved trial test for 5G for a period of three (3) months and that the trial has been concluded and installation decommissioned”, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, said. Danbatta said further: ‘’the trial among others was to study and observe any health or security challenges the 5G network might present. Relevant stakeholders including members of the security agencies were invited to participate in the trial’’.

Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami concluded by stating that the NCC will continue to uphold its technology neutrality policies and will continue to allow service providers to deploy the latest technologies that addresses society's needs in a safe and comfortable manner.
