Education: The analog practices of admission / graduate clearance in Federal polytechnic Oko is becoming an eye sore to the academic community

3 minute read

Academic stress has become a pervasive problem across countries, most especially in Eastern part of Nigeria and Africa as a whole. Depression, anxiety, behavioural problems, irritability, etc. are few of the many problems reported in students with high academic/clearance stress.

A research made at one of the Polytechnic in Eastern part of Nigeria identified some student  fainted during admission clearance because they stood on the sun for a long time waiting to be attended to. The analog practices of admission/graduate clearance in Federal polytechnic Oko is becoming an eye sore to the academic community.

In Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra state Nigeria, newly admitted students are passing through hell to do their clearance. Most of times, they are insulted and even neglected.

A civil servant or a staff ought to be in office at least 9:00 am but in Federal Polytechnic Oko you see the staff coming to work by 11:00am and closing by 1:00pm. Some might come on time but to carry out their duties or attend to students needs will be a problem; rather they will sit ideal gossiping or eating.

The most painful thing is the way the workers of the polytechnic address student as if they are came out from dirt. The staffs lack manner of approach thus training needs to be conducted to teach them good morals.

It is only in Federal Polytechnic Oko that you will see student cue up under the hot sun for 7 hours without been attended to. The worst of it all is that some of these students a pregnant ladies or nursing mothers; imagine the stress they are going through.

Is there no better ways of doing this admission clearance process in Federal polytechnic Oko?

This image below is newly admitted students at the medical center, some sleep there, many other wake by 4:00AM to cue up. It is the same thing at admission office to collect admission letter, remittance at bursary, ICT center, book shop and even Head of the department office. What is happening? The stress is too much on the students.

I thought Fedpolyoko is a digital polytechnic, but the analog practices and reality is becoming an eye sore to the academic community.

In this era of technology and digital world, OkoPoly is still verifying payments; payments made through various banks. Why cant it be done online, are they that novice?

The government and Ministry of Education should look into this matter because the students are crying and suffering all in the name of acquiring knowledge; a knowledge of which they paid for.
