Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu

The Chief of Police announced that Buhari had ordered an urgent restructuring of the Nigerian Police Force.

Adamu indicated that the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) should be named as Head after the FIB has been excluded from the FCID.

This was contained in a memo signed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu.

The IGP said that the plan is expected to inject intelligence into the "global police effort to tackle the challenges presented to the country by the nature of crime."

Adamu, in a memo entitled "Force Reorganization," explained that with the President's approval, the NPF now has eight departments.

Buhari also approved the creation of an additional five Zonal Commands. The aim is to bring the police service closer to citizens in all parts of Nigeria.

They are Ondo/Ekiti Commands with the Headquarters in Akure; Enugu/Anambra/Ebonyi Commands with the Headquarters in Awka.

Others are Bayelsa/Rivers Commands with the Headquarters in Yenagoa; Yobe/Borno Commands with the Headquarters in Maiduguri; and Katsina/Kaduna Commands in Katsina.

He said: "In order to improve the ability of the four senior police colleges in Kaduna, Ikeja, Maiduguri and Rivers to fulfill the training and capacity building plan of the Force in relation to junior officers, Mr. President decided to raise the status of College Commanders to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG)."

He expressed trust that the change would improve administration, enhance the engagement of staff and contribute to a higher level of discipline and standard of training at the Colleges.

IGP Adamu noted: "These approvals were issued by the President in support of the need to extend and improve the Intelligence Department in order to push the intelligence-led police policy of the leadership of the Force and to help reinforce the community-based police activity as approved by the Federal Government."

Nigeria Police assets, the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB) will soon be removed from the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID).

The FIB would become a fully-fledged department. President Muhammadu Buhari gave his approval in his capacity as chairman of the Nigerian Police Council.
