Islamic group NASFAT seeks more stringent punishment in Nigeria for rape

Nastrul Lahil Fatih Society of Nigeria (NASFAT), an Islamic group, has called for more stringent sanctions against gender-based violence in the country.

The chairman of NASFAT in Kaduna State, Engr. Muhyideen Yusuf, made the appeal in a statement in Kaduna on Saturday, NAN reports.

Yusuf expressed concern over Nigeria's worsening of gender-based violence against women and the girl-child and called for immediate action to stop it.

According to him, Vera Omozua, Barakat Bello and many others have recently been inappropriate for rape and gruesome murder.

This cruelty is foreign to all our beloved country's religions and traditions, and in all its consequences we denounce this barbaric abuse. There are no excuses or any justifications from the perpetrators of this cruelty that are acceptable at all.

We are now calling on all religious organisations, civil society organisations, non-governmental organizations and citizens to join together with the government at all levels to stop these evils that have infested our society.

He said, NASFAT prays with their families to rest the souls of all the departed victims of this crime.

Meanwhile, the Nigerians have been pressing for an end to rape in the country alongside prominent figures in the past few days.

The request became relevant after the killing of one Vera Omozuwa who was raped and killed in a church in Benin by unknown persons.
