News update: What Tinubu said about Fasanmi death

Former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu has commiserated with the Afenifere leader's family and associates, Ayo Fasanmi.

Fasanmi died on Wednesday in Osogbo while Tinubu said in a Thursday statement that Papa's long sojourn on earth was for the good of all.

The national leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC) said the late elder statesman walked in true federalism to the vanguard of all democrats, freedom fighters and believers.

Tinubu observed that living to the age of 94 was the blessing of God not just to him and his family but to Nigeria he cherished profoundly.

"I have had an intimate relationship with Paba Fasanmi, many years ago. To me and many others, he was a mentor and role model who believed in radical politics as a way to uplift our society and its people. When Papa was recently admitted to hospital for age-related illness, I talked to him and followed up on his condition with his close assistant.

As leader of Afenifere Tinubu said he was a firm believer in the value of fiscal federalism as central to Nigeria 's development.

His political soulmates including Pa Fasoranti, Chief Bisi Akande and others shared the grief.

Tinubu added that Pa Fasoranti was committed to social growth and the promotion of democracy.

He added: "This fine work is not over. Our hopes in Nigeria remain a work in progress. Papa Fasanmi fought for that dream and supported those patriots, like President Muhammadu Buhari, who worked for the same purpose as well. Let's all learn from the example of Papa Fasanmi and join hands in pushing Nigeria towards a safe harbor of stability and prosperity.

Tinubu prayed that God Almighty give eternal rest to Pa Fasanmi 's soul.

He beseeched God to direct and console his children, and to give them perseverance in living by his example to start after him.
