A total of 875 people have committed suicide during the lockdown period in Nepal – Smart Updates



The suicide cases across the country increased by 16 per cent in the first month of the lockdown, according to data compiled by the Nepal Police. Since 24 March, the country has been shut down to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus disease.

A total of 482 suicide cases were filed in police stations across the country between mid-March and mid-April against 414 cases during the period from mid-February to mid-March.

The data suggest that the number during the lockdown is considerably higher, as 38 people committed suicide in the Kathmandu Valley alone.

The highest number, 742 died from hanging themselves followed by 114 people who committed suicide through poison consumption.


Over the examination period, the victim had used smoking, slashing, drowning, falling from heights as big methods to commit suicides.

Many psychiatrists linked the deaths to the people's mental health, who were forced to stay indoors during the lockdown.

The cases of suicide were recorded as of May 16,' said Niraj Bahadur Shahi, Nepal Police spokesperson, adding that the police revised the suicide case data afterwards.
